Telling text: How to write effectively for visitors on the move

This one-day intensive course aims to help you communicate effectively through the written word – for text on labels and graphic panels and on screen

‘Telling text’ is for anyone who writes to engage visitors’ attention
It’s for interpreters, curators, subject experts, site managers, custodians, DIY writers/graphic designers – anyone involved in writing:
  • in museums or art galleries

  • at historic, cultural and natural environment sites and attractions

  • for exhibitions, displays, interactive databases, and all kinds of interpretive panels.
This course is valuable for those with any level of writing experience, from beginners to those with lots of experience who want to refresh and refine their skills.

‘Telling text’ covers the basics of writing effective interpretive text

This course will help you:
  • understand your visitors as readers – from streakers to sticklers

  • plan and carry out the writing task, using a structured brief

  • get to grips with techniques for concise and straightforward writing.
    You’ll do writing exercises, look at examples of best practice, and develop text tailored to a topic or application chosen by you.

    Cost: $175

    The course fee includes up to 2 hours’ additional individual consultation, at your worksite or by email or Skype. Lunch and morning tea are also included.

    About the presenter

    Michael Keith is a writer and editor and director of visitor communication specialists Shearwater Associates. He has written interpretive text for Te Papa, Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum, Auckland’s Stardome, Department of Conservation and Surf Life Saving New Zealand, among many others.
