A replica gold-rush town of the 1880s, Shantytown is situated on the site of an 1865 gold-rush and tells the inspirational stories of the hardy, treasure seeking immigrants who flocked to the West Coast when payable gold was discovered in late 1864. Visitors can take a steam train ride, go gold-panning and explore the village, which includes a colonial hospital, a jail, an historic kauri church and ‘Chinatown’.
Kia Ora and welcome to Interpretation New Zealand. We design and implement innovative interpretation and successful visitor experiences for a wide range of clients.
Interpretation planning for site developments, visitor centres. Training for tour guides (NZ and Asia Pacific). Advice to Councils, SOEs, DOC, community trusts and private developers on integrating interpretation into development projects.
